The Coconut Peeler Who Opened My Eyes
At four o’clock in the morning, while preparing to review for my Financial Management final exam, I came across the Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho episode entitled “Kalbaryo ni Lolo Mano” which aired in July 2018. The story featured Constantino Velasquez Jr., more commonly known as Lolo Mano, a 69‑year‑old blind man from Lupon, Davao Oriental. Despite his disability and old age, he continued to peel coconuts every day para sa kakapiranggot na kitang 300 pesos just to survive. His perseverance, even in the face of poverty and danger, left a deep impression on me.
Watching his story made me realize two important things. First, I am truly lucky to have the life I have right now. Unlike Lolo Mano, I do not have to endure the same hardships just to meet my basic needs. I have opportunities for education, support systems, and resources that allow me to pursue my dreams. Second, I realized that life is really unfair to everyone. Some people, like Lolo Mano, are burdened with struggles that seem heavier than others, while some are given privileges and comforts. This unfairness is part of reality, but it also teaches us to be more compassionate and grateful.
The episode inspired me to strive harder and never complain about what I have. It reminded me to appreciate every blessing, whether small or big, because many people would give anything to have even a fraction of the opportunities I enjoy. Lolo Mano’s resilience became a mirror for me: if he can continue working despite blindness and poverty, then I can certainly push myself to study diligently and succeed in my exams.
Today, as I sit down for my Financial Management final exam, I carry with me the lessons of Lolo Mano. His struggle taught me that perseverance and gratitude are not just words, but lifelines in times of challenge. If he can peel coconuts in darkness for a small earning of 300 pesos, then I can surely face my exam with determination and hope. Passing this exam will not only be for my future, but also my way of honoring the inspiration I gained from his journey, reminding myself never to complain, and always to appreciate the blessings, whether big or small.
As Jessica Soho said at the end of the episode: “Napakahirap isipin kung paano siya namuhay sa dilim, kaya tayong higit na nakakakita, magbigay dapat ng kaunting liwanag at pag-asa.”
