Pinalaki Ka ng Sexbomb Para Lumaban: The Legacy of the Sexbomb Girls

Get Get Aww! That was the first battle cry of the revolution. Not of our national heroes, but of the gay community. And who started it? None other than the Sexbomb Girls.

During the era of the Sexbomb Girls, the sangkabaklaan in the early 2000s flocked to the streets of the barangay every afternoon, often seen engaging in life-risking dance showdowns. The ‘hilot’ business also boomed due to the number of injured gay children.

The phrase “Pinalaki Ka ng Sexbomb Para Lumaban” (Raised by Sexbomb to Fight) encapsulates the spirit of the group. The Sexbomb Girls were more than just entertainers; they were role models who showed that hard work, dedication, and a fighting spirit could lead to success

Who could forget the original members of the Sexbomb Girls: Rochelle Pangilinan, Jopay Paguia, Sunshine Garcia, Che Che, Sandy Tolentino, Louise Bolton, Weng, Monica, and Aira Bermudez? Today, they each have their own lives.

The Sexbomb Girls were crowned as the Best Selling All-Female Group in the Philippines of All Time. Yes, that’s right. They were also the first girl group in the Philippines to have a successful career in singing, acting, and dancing. All their dance albums were eagerly bought by 'sangkabaklaan'. Their drama series, “Daisy Siete,” which they starred in, lasted for seven years, making it the longest-running drama series in the Philippines. They set the standard for excellence in dancing in the country. Their dances and songs like “Bakit Papa,” “Spageti,” and “Halukay Ube” were staples at aerobics classes and Christmas parties.

The Sexbomb Girls’ influence is particularly significant within the LGBTQ+ community. Their bold performances and unapologetic confidence resonated with many, providing a sense of representation and validation. The group’s popularity among gay men, especially millennials, who often emulated their dance routines and style, highlights their role in fostering a sense of community and pride.

If only former member Sugar hadn’t caused drama with her crying, they might still be on “Eat Bulaga” today, dancing until they grew old. I won’t go into the details of Sugar’s antics because everyone knows about it. Eventually, they left “Eat Bulaga” and were replaced by a new girl group, the EB Babes.

With the departure of the Sexbomb Girls and the arrival of the EB Babes on “Eat Bulaga,” fans clashed, leading to chaos and disputes. To settle the score, a showdown was held to prove that the Sexbomb Girls were superior to the EB Babes. This resulted in the most flamboyant showdown in television history.

Today, the original members of the Sexbomb Girls have moved on to different paths, but their impact remains. They set a standard for excellence in performance and showed that with passion and perseverance, one could achieve greatness. Their legacy continues to inspire new generations of performers and fans alike.
